FACTS

Kang Daesung (Hangul: 강대성; born April 26, 1989) is a member of K-Pop group Big Bang. Daesung was born in Itaewon, South Korea and attended high school (KyeongIn High School) but he dropped out and focused more on Big Bang. Then in late 2008, he focused on college entrance exams. He attended Kyunghee University in Seoul. Since his debut, he has released solo singles, performed in musicals, acted in a drama What’s Up, and became a member of reality-variety television series Family Outing and talk show Night After Night.

Although his parents were against the idea of him becoming a singer, Daesung pursued a singing career and was eventually recruited by YG Entertainment after auditioning. He later appeared on a documentary show following the potential members of what eventually became Big Bang.

Their first appearance as a group was on August 19, 2006 at YG Family’s 10th Anniversary concert. On September 23, 2006, they had their debut performance. Daesung’s first released solo is “Useo Bonda” (Korean: “웃어본다”, “Try Smiling”) included in BIGBANG 03 single and Since 2007 album released at the end of 2006. The group had its first big hit with “Geojitmal” (Korean: “거짓말”, “Lies”) in 2007.

Shortly after the debut of Big Bang, Daesung was diagnosed with voice chord nodules. For nearly a year, he desperately struggled with his voice and developed sociophobia and stage fright. However, he was able to recover with the help of fellow singer Gummy, who had been diagnosed previously as well, and the two became close because of this situation. Before the release of Big Bang’s second album, Daesung’s condition improved drastically.
[edit] 2008–09: Trot solos, Family Outing, Cats, and car accident

In between various albums and EPs as a group, the members were able to pursue solo activities. Daesung released his debut trot single “Nal Bwa Gwisoon” (Korean: “날 봐, 귀순”, “Look at Me, Gwisun”) in 2008;[1] he stated that although he was worried about dampening the group’s image, he wanted to try something different.[2] He was admitted into the post-modern music department at Kyung Hee University in 2008.[3] The singer also joined the reality-variety show Family Outing as a permanent member. The show revealed that his IQ was 110.[4] He also joined the Korean production of Cats, playing the role of Rum Tum Tugger.[5]

In the midst of Big Bang’s break in early 2009, Daesung released his second trot single in early 2009, titled “Daebakiya” (“Korean: 대박이야”, “Big Hit”).[2] He was also scheduled to join bandmate Seungri in the autobiographical musical Shouting;[6] however, the singer was injured in a car accident in August before the musical’s run, and ultimately required surgery.[7][8] The accident happened on his way back home from the site of the filming location of Family Outing. Daesung was sitting beside the driver (his manager), while his coordinator sat behind. The injuries forced Daesung to halt all activities; he eventually made his return in October 2009, joining his group for the Dream Concert.[9]
2010: Additional solo work, What’s Up, Night After Night

According to his agency, YG Entertainment, he is supposed to release his solo album during 2010 along with fellow bandmate T.O.P. Daesung’s new song, “Cotton Candy”, was released at the end of January.[10] He wrote the lyrics of the song and the composer is Jung Ji Chan.[11] The album was not released in 2010. In the beginning of 2011, YG Entertainment suggested that Daesung and Seungri will promote this year, but no actions have been made on Daesung’s part yet. Seungri, however, did release a mini album in January.

In 2010 he was shooting for a 100% pre-production drama What’s Up written by the famous scriptwriter Song Ji Na. The shooting of the drama finished in Feb 2011. He was also one of the hosts in variety-talk show Night After Night since November 2010.
2011: Big Bang comeback

In April 2011 he released a solo song “Baby Don’t Cry” included in Big Bang’s 4th mini album special edition. The song was first performed in Big Show 2011 concert in February and reached various Korean charts together with the title tracks in the album.
2011: Car accident and hiatus

On May 31 at around 1:30am, Daesung was involved in a car accident at Yanghwa Bridge, Seoul. He ran over a motorcyclist Hyun lying on the ground from a previous accident. Daesung was driving behind two cars at an estimated speed of 60 km/h; and because the cars in front of him changed lanes too quickly, Daesung was unable to see the motorcyclist lying on the road thus ran over the body, then crashed into a taxi which stopped in front of the body. The taxi driver had minor injury. Daesung was not under the influence of alcohol. The initial report from police stated that due to the existence of an unknown previous incident, autopsy and more investigation were needed to be done to examine whether Daesung’s crash caused Hyun’s death. On June 1, 2011, Hyun’s body, the vehicles involved and Hyun’s motorbike were sent to the National Forensic Service (NFS) for further investigation.

On June 24, 2011 10am KST, the deceased’s autopsy result was released by the Seoul, Youngdeungpo police. The motorcyclist, whose alcohol level was 0.186, fell off his bike after colliding into a streetlight on which he hit his head and suffered “extremely severe injuries to the forehead, face, nape and other areas”; two cars in front of Daesung’s car switched lane immediately when they saw the lying body but Daesung could not see it thus ran over the body and caused death to the already-injured motorcyclist.[12] Despite the suggestion by NFS that the motorcyclist’s injuries from the first accident were severe enough to be fatal and life threatening, Youngdeungpo police still confirmed his death was a result of Daesung’s collision and recommended indictment of Daesung to prosecutors.[13]

In mid July, Daesung and victim’s family have reached a settlement.[14] The case was dismissed in the end of August; all nine members of the jury unanimously ruled Daesung not guilty.[15] The prosecutors decided that there wasn’t enough hard evidence to determine whether or not the motorcyclist Hyun had been alive or deceased before Daesung ran him over with his vehicle. Also, they did not rule out the possibility that the motorcyclist, who was under the influence upon the time of his death, could’ve died from the initial collision with a streetlight.

Between the time after the accident happened and before the autopsy result released, Daesung had been greatly affected by the accident emotionally.[16] There have been numerous support extended to both Daesung and the deceased Hyun, such as the trending of #wesupportDaesung on twitter by celebrities such as Jay Park[17] and concern shown by Lee Hyori and pianist Jung Jae Hyung[18] and fan projects such as message books.[19] When the autopsy result released on June 24, fans started a new twitter trend #StayStrongDaesung.

Although the case has been dismissed and Daesung has been acquitted of all charges at the end of August 2011, YG announced that Daesung does not have any activities planned for the rest of 2011; he will resume activities in the beginning of 2012.[20] During this hiatus, Daesung has been going to a church very often and volunteering there. [21]
[edit] End of 2011 comeback: MTV EMAs, YG Family concert, What’s Up drama

Since the incident, Daesung had his first public appearance on Nov 6, 2011 by attending MTV EMA awards in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was also a comeback for G-Dragon and the whole BIGBANG team as 5. The group won the Worldwide Act award.

In December 2011 and January 2012, he will also be performing for YG Family concerts taking place in South Korea and Japan.[22] [23]

The musical drama “What’s Up” will be airing on MBN channel in December or the beginning of 2012
