Selena Gomez really does it all. She's a Golden Globe-nominated actor for her work on Only Murders in the Building; she's the founder of her own beauty brand, Rare Beauty; she's a Grammy-nominated singer, who dropped her most recent record “Single Soon” in August 2023; and she's, well… tired.

During an appearance on the SmartLess podcast this week, Selena Gomez shared that she's been thinking about focusing on just one creative avenue, and music is last on her priority list.

“I started having a lot of fun with music and then touring was really fun. But I was doing my TV show [Wizards of Waverly Place] at the same time and I just found it really fun so I just kept going, but the older I get, the more I’m kind of like, I would like to find something to just settle on,” she explained. She also talked about how the intense workload of her early years in the spotlight impacted her mental health. “I went to a mental institute and canceled one of my tours,” Gomez shared. “It just got to me because I love working and it distracts me from bad things.”

The star has taken steps to slow down, but she's still got a pretty full plate — which is why she's thinking of focusing solely on acting and letting her music career fall to the wayside. “I do feel like I have one more album in me but I would probably choose acting," Gomez said.

The star also mentioned that her singing career began in part because of her role on Wizards; she sang the theme song and things picked up from there. “Disney is, it’s safe to say, a machine and, in a way, forcefully require[d] that I know how to sing so I could sing the theme song [of a show]," she explained. “They know how to package someone and make it a whole triple threat thing.”

Gomez shared that she originally wanted to be an actress and “never intended” to be a singer, but she developed a fanbase and has since released a handful of solo albums, including her beloved 2015 album Revival and 2021's critically-acclaimed Revelación.

Despite the fact that a music career was never her goal, she does find herself enjoying it. Gomez was recently spotted in the studio with Camila Cabello, and she's currently dating producer Benny Blanco, so that final album may not be too far away.

“I don’t think I’m the best singer but I do know how to tell stories and I love being able to make songs," she told the SmartLess hosts. When they told her she didn't have to choose acting versus music and could do both, Gomez agreed — but she admitted she needs a break. “You’re right, but I am going to want to chill because I’m tired.” Can't argue with that.
