Did Selena Gomez Just Announce Her Retirement From Music?

Following

For 15 years now, Selena Gomez has held her place as one of the most popular and commercially successful female pop stars in the music business. With each new era, she only seems to become bigger and bigger…but she may not be focusing on singing much longer. In a new interview, Gomez admitted that she is already thinking about her retirement—and it may be coming sooner than many would have anticipated.

The superstar was the guest on the most recent episode of the podcast SmartLess, which is hosted by celebrity friends Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. She stated that as she looks ahead and thinks about what she most wants to focus on in her career, which spans many different arenas in the entertainment world, music may not be a priority any longer.

“I do feel like I have one more album in me,” Gomez shared during the chat, stating that she’s thinking of just one more full-length before stepping away. This news came as a shock to her millions of fans, who quickly spoke up on social media about the comment.

During her SmartLess appearance, Gomez stated that she was considering putting music to the side not because she didn’t like it, but so she could focus on her acting career. In addition to being a chart-topping pop musician, Gomez is also a celebrated TV producer and actress. She’s currently starring in the hit Hulu program Only Murders in the Building, which has brought the multi-talented figure her first Emmy nominations.

The hosts of SmartLess pointed out that, like so many others in the industry, she doesn’t have to choose between the two art forms. Just as she’s been doing for more than a decade, Gomez can work on both music and acting. She admitted, “You’re right,” but didn’t leave the comment there. Gomez also added, “but I am going to want to chill because I’m tired.”

Just last month, Gomez casually mentioned online that not only is she hard at work on her next album, but that she’s planning on dropping it early in 2024. A fan reached out to the pop singer on Twitter to ask “when is sg3 coming,” referring to her as-yet-untitled third solo album. The star replied calmly, “in two months” which was a shock to many.

Throughout her music career, Gomez has found incredible success, both as part of a band–Selena Gomez and the Scene–and on her own. She has charted a total of six top 10 albums on the Billboard 200–with half of those going straight to No. 1. On the Hot 100 singles tally, she’s enjoyed even greater luck. She’s scored 40 Hot 100 wins, including nine top 10s, and a single No. 1.
