Chile Earthquake: Chile Marked Deadly Earthquake’s 12th Anniversary

Chile marked 12 years of the deadly earthquake of magnitude 8.8, that shook the country for 3 whole minutes and caused massive damage to property, infrastructure and lives on February 27, 2010. The earthquake was felt strongly in six regions, impacting more than 13 million residents.

Chile Earthquake: Impact

The deadly Chile earthquake also triggered a tsunami that destroyed coastal towns across south-central Chile. The tsunami wave even impacted regions in California and Japan. The quake caused a blackout for 93 percent of the residents. It was even declared as a “state of catastrophe”.

The Chile earthquake caused a trail of destruction – with more than 370, 000 buildings and homes were completely damaged, as a fire broke out in country’s capital city, Santiago. Additionally, the deadly quake also led to more than 1000 landslides in the major wine producing area of Maule in Chile. As per the records, a total of 525 residents were killed and about 9 percent of the impacted population lost their homes.

Total Economic Losses

According to the USGS, more than 800, 000 residents were displaced, 12, 000 injured and 56 were missing when the deadly m-8.8 Chile earthquake hit the region.

The quake’s damaged and destroyed an estimate of 370, 000 houses, 4013 schools, 79 hospitals and 42000 boats. The total estimated loss was around $30 billion.
