Abstract

A system and a method for remote servicing an intelligent device, such as for example a graphic arts plate -setter or an inkjet printer, comprises a collector tool and an agent tool. The collector tool collects or sets parameters that describe a status of the intelligent device and communicates these parameters with the agent tool under a form of XML- structured data. The agent tool interprets the structured data and communicates over a network with a service tool operated by a service operator. The interpretation preferably involves filtering out and/or transforming parameters selected by the service operator. The service operator is able to interactively get and set device parameters. The invention reduces bandwidth and storage requirements. The modular approach using a device specific collector tool and a generic agent tool also reduces development time and cost of said generic agent tool compared to an approach that uses a device specific agent tool.
