Abstract

In order to determine a cause of a reduced performance of service in a communications network, information that describes network elements, which are relevant to the provision of a service, with regard to their functional properties and their topological arrangement is stored in a network element database and is assigned to the service. In addition, service availability and/or service quality for a selected service are tested at preset times. A service affected by a reduced performance of service is determined based on a result of this testing. Network elements relevant to the provision of the service, which is affected by the reduced performance of service, are determined based on the information stored in the network element database. The determined network elements are tested in order to determine a cause of the reduced performance of service.

Description

Beschreibungdescription
Ermittlung einer Ursache einer Dienst-Minderleistung in einem KommunikationsnetzDetermining a cause of a service underperformance in a communication network
The present invention relates to a method for identifying a cause of a service underperformance in a communication network, a communication network control and monitoring system and a control program for a quality of service and / or a fault monitoring device.
Network operators offer numerous services to customers in the telecommunications market, in particular Internet services. Services offered by network operators are broken down into different levels of service to meet customer needs for guaranteed levels of service and to stand out from the competition. For example, services are offered at low costs for private customers and services with an extended scope at higher costs for business customers. The expanded scope of services consists, for example, of ensuring high availability and low data loss. For this purpose, service level agreements (SLA) are made between the network operator and the customer to what extent and quality of services to be provided to the customer are specified. Proof of compliance with the service level agreement towards the customer is of particular importance. For such proof, services must be monitored, for example, to register failures and to determine the availability of a service. Measurements are also taken to capture quality of service parameters such as data loss. The provision of services is therefore not limited to the pure administration of service parameters, such as bandwidth or telephone number, but also service-specific additional functions are controlled. In order to minimize the effects of non-compliance with a quality of service agreement for both the network operator and the customer, a reliable and quick detection of service shortfalls is essential.
The object of the present invention is to create an efficient and reliable method for identifying a cause of an under-performance of the service, and to specify a suitable implementation of the method and a communication network control and monitoring system suitable for carrying out the method.
This object is achieved according to the invention by a method with the features specified in claim 1, a communication network control and monitoring system with the features specified in claim 8 and a control program with the features specified in claim 9. Advantageous developments of the method according to the invention are specified in the dependent claims.
An essential prerequisite for an efficient and reliable detection of a cause of a service underperformance is that according to the invention, services which are affected by a service underperformance are first determined on the basis of a check of the quality or availability of the service performed for selected services. The checking of quality of service or availability can be adapted to the requirements that users of a communication network place on services used. As a result, test results are largely representative of the quality of service or availability perceived by the users. As soon as the services affected by an under-performance of the service have been determined, network elements which are relevant for the provision of these services in accordance with information stored in a network element database can be checked selectively for determining the cause. This has the advantage that it is not essentially continuous initially all network elements must be checked in order to use them to derive statements about potentially endangered or disturbed services. Overall, the present invention therefore results in a significantly reduced outlay for reliable monitoring of network elements.

The description of the topological arrangement of network elements includes a subdivision of the network elements in the node network elements, such as measuring points and switching points, and edge network elements, such as line connections, and a preparation as topological information in accordance with a node-edge model. The information stored in the network element database 103 is made available to the error monitoring device 104 and the quality of service monitoring device 105 so that it can be called up.

When a service is set up or changed, the service provider 101 transmits a message to the error monitoring device 104 with an order to monitor the availability of network elements which are specified as relevant for the provision of the respective service. In a corresponding manner, a message 125 with an order for monitoring the quality of service is transmitted to the quality of service monitoring device 105. These monitoring jobs cause error monitoring device 104 and quality of service monitoring device 105 to transmit error messages 127 and measured values 128 recorded in subnetworks 106, 107, 108, which are forwarded to error monitoring device 104 and / or service quality monitoring device 105 via a network operating system 109, 110, 111 assigned to the respective subnetwork to compare with the information stored in the network element database 103 for impermissible deviations. For this purpose, corresponding network element database information is queried by the error monitoring device 104 or the quality of service monitoring device 105 and transmitted to the latter as messages 126. In the event of an impermissible deviation from the information stored in the network element database 103 is quality monitoring device by the error monitoring device 104 and service 105 a message 129,130 by a reduction in service capacity, indicating the affected diene ¬ tes generated.
The availability and the quality of service are monitored in accordance with a quality of service agreement made between a customer and a network operator. Therefore, only information relating to the network elements specified as relevant by a service level agreement for the provision of a service is stored in the network element database 103. In addition, error messages or measured values are only recorded for the network elements specified as relevant by the service level agreement for the provision of the service. In order to monitor the provisions defined within the framework of a quality of service agreement, a message 123 with an order for monitoring a quality of service agreement is transmitted from the service provision device 101 to the error monitoring device 104 when a service is set up or changed. This means that a recording of error messages or measured values for network elements specified as relevant by the service level agreement for the provision of a service is already initiated by the establishment or change of the corresponding service.
Ergibt die Auswertung eines Meßwertes 128 in der Dienstgüte- Überwachungseinrichtung 105, das ein Netzelement außerhalb eines zulässigen Betriebsbereichs betrieben wird, so wird von der Dienstgüteüberwachungseinrichtung 105 eine Alarm eldung 129 über eine Verletzung eines Dienstsgütekriteriums an dieIf the evaluation of a measured value 128 in the quality of service monitoring device 105 reveals that a network element is operated outside an admissible operating range, the quality of service monitoring device 105 sends an alarm message 129 about a violation of a quality of service criterion to the
Fault monitoring device 104 is transmitted and converted there into an alarm message 130 about a violation of a quality of service agreement. An error message 127 is converted in the error monitoring device 104 directly into an alarm message about the violation of a service level agreement.
The alarm message 130 contains a statement about the availability of the service or the quality of service and becomes a service reduction. elimination of errors to a network operating system 109, 110, 111, which is assigned to the subnet 106, 107, 108, in which an error or a violation of the quality of service criterion occurs. The respective network operating system 109, 110, 111 converts the alarm message 130 into a control command 131, which is transmitted as a message for the elimination of underperformance to a selected control device, not explicitly shown, in the respective subnetwork 106, 107, 108. For the elimination of low-performance services, the network element affected by the elimination of low-performance services is reconfigured by the respective network operating system 109, 110, 111 with access to the information stored in the network elements database 103. This also applies to the configuration of a network element when a service is set up, changed or deleted.
The alarm message 130 about a violation of a quality of service agreement is also transmitted to the service provision device 101. There it is processed with customer data and converted into a report 132 about compliance with or violation of a service level agreement.
Solving every problem arising in a communication network as quickly as possible in order to guarantee quality of service and availability is not economically sensible from today's perspective. Due to the large number of services offered to customers by network operators on the basis of numerous service level agreements, approaches to remedying network problems should always be based on a customer- or service-oriented view of available network resources or elements. This requires a check of quality of service and availability from the customer's point of view. Essential criteria in such a check are quality of service parameters such as data transmission rate, latency and phase fluctuations leading to data loss. For this reason, it makes sense to check which network problems influence which services in order to build on a priority elaborate to solve network problems, for example on the basis of quality of service agreements. Early detection of emerging network problems is also of great importance, which can potentially disrupt or endanger services in the short term.
In order to meet these requirements, the present invention combines approaches which are directed to monitoring network elements or network resources on the physical level on the one hand and to monitoring quality of service and availability at the application level on the other hand. Approaches aimed at pure monitoring at the physical level reach their limits, particularly in extensive, complex networks, since in such cases a large number of network elements and network resources have to be monitored. In particular, if a central network resource fails, there is a problem in that this failure triggers a large number of subsequent alarm messages. This means that in such critical situations, an enormous amount of information has to be processed under time-critical conditions. A first approach to dealing with this problem is to filter out secondary alarm messages. Approaches aimed at pure monitoring at the application level offer the advantage of a service- or customer-oriented perspective and information pre-compression with regard to the evaluation of alarm messages, but have the disadvantage that based on the results of the check no statements about errors or Problem causes can be deduced. According to the invention, the two approaches mentioned are linked by providing information about a network and service topology.
The provision 201 of information about the network and service topology represents the starting point of the method according to the invention for determining a cause of a reduced service in a communication network, the sequence of which is illustrated using the flowchart shown in Figure 2. For this purpose, network elements relevant to the provision of a service are described in their functional properties and in their topological arrangement, and the associated descriptive information is stored in the network element database 103 and assigned to the respective service. This is followed by a definition 202 for checking the services provided and a definition 203 for a schedule for checking the selected services with regard to service availability or quality of service. After the services and schedule have been defined, the service availability or quality of service is checked 204 at the specified times and for the selected services. An evaluation 205 of check results is then carried out, and on the basis of these check results, disrupted or endangered services are determined which are either directly or potentially affected by an under-performance of the service. A determination 206 of network elements to be checked is carried out on the basis of the information about the network and service topology stored in the network element database 103. The determined network elements to be checked are those network elements which are identified in the network element database 103 as relevant for the provision of the service affected by the reduced service. This is followed by carrying out 207 a check of the determined network elements with a final evaluation 208 of the check results and a determination of network elements which are the cause of the service underperformance.
The check 204 of the selected services with regard to service availability or quality of service is carried out on the basis of a comparison with the information stored in the network element database 103. The information stored in the network element database describes the permissible operating ranges of the network elements. Furthermore, the check 207 is also carried out determined network elements for determining a cause of the service underperformance on the basis of this information.
Anwendungsprogramme erstrecken. The determined network elements are checked to determine the cause of a service underperformance, for example by detecting status or error messages for the respective network elements. These messages can be monitored actively or passively by the error monitoring device 104 or the quality of service monitoring device 105. Furthermore, such monitoring can also extend to data processing devices not explicitly shown in FIG. 1, which are connected to the communication network shown in FIG. 1, and to operating system or application programs running on these data processing devices.
In order to check the availability of the service or the quality of service, control sequences which can be specified by the error monitoring device 104 or the quality of service monitoring device 105 are provided for execution at or from selected service access points in the subnets 106.107, 108. This means that a virtual user is set up at the respective service access point, whose behavior is mapped by the service access requests summarized in the control sequence. Such a virtual user can appear both as a message source and as a message sink. Since a virtual user can be controlled essentially completely by the error monitoring device 104 or the service quality monitoring device 105, it can in principle be placed at any service access points, for example in the vicinity of service access points of real users or at interfaces between subnetworks. The following scenarios can be emulated, for example, by the control sequences which contain the predefinable service access requests: - "Internet access" - query one or more reference Internet pages,
- "E-Mail" - Senden einer Referenz-E-Mail an einen E-Mail- Server und Abfrage der E-Mail vom E-Mail-Server, - "Datei-Transfer" - Abfrage einer Referenz-Datei von einem Datei-Server,- "E-Mail" - sending a reference e-mail to an e-mail server and querying the e-mail from the e-mail server, - "file transfer" - requesting a reference file from a file - Server,
- "Domänen-Namen-Zugriff" - Auflösung von logischen Inter- netadressen in physikalische Internetadressen,- "Domain name access" - Resolution of logical Internet addresses in physical Internet addresses,
- "TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) " - Aufbau einer TCP- Verbindung,- "TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)" - establishment of a TCP connection,
"DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) " - Abfrage einer Internet-Adresse,"DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)" - query an Internet address,
"UDP (User Datagram Protocol) " - Senden eines UDF-Datenpa- kets von einer Datenquelle zu einer Datensenke."UDP (User Datagram Protocol)" - Sending a UDF data packet from a data source to a data sink.
Furthermore, network elements that are essential for the provision of a selected service can be checked for operability at predeterminable times, without this requiring a prior check of the service with regard to quality of service or service availability. This offers the advantage that particularly critical network resources can be checked directly even without any indications of service underperformance. In a direct check of their functionality, end devices can also be included, the check of which is determined at selected times by a service level agreement between a customer and a network operator. This means that a check of network elements or network resources can relate not only to network elements or network resources owned by the network operator, but also to customer-specific end devices.
The above-described method for recognizing a service underperformance can also be used to determine faults in power supply units which, from the network operator's point of view, do not belong to one's own network but to an external network and which cannot be directly controlled from the network operator's perspective. The implementation of the method steps carried out in the service provision device 101, the communication connection management device 102, the error monitoring device 104 and the service quality monitoring device 105 takes place in each case by a control program provided for the service provision device 101, the communication connection management device 102, the error monitoring device 104 and the service quality monitoring device 105. The respective control program runs on a data processing system assigned to the service provision device 101, the communication connection management device 102, the error monitoring device 104 or the quality of service monitoring device 105. Depending on the application, it is also possible to use a common data processing system on which the control programs mentioned run either separately or as combined control programs.
The application of the present invention is not restricted to the exemplary embodiment described here.
