Abstract

An Internet content filtering software comprises two components. One component runs on an Internet server and the other component runs locally on a user's computer system. The two components cooperate with one another to filter Internet content, with each component performing separate tasks. The Internet server component stores user profiles, a list and/or a table of permitted and prohibited Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), and receives redirected URL requests. Redirected URL requests are utilized, in conjunction with a user's profile, to determine whether access is granted or denied to the content associated with the URL. The component running locally on a user's computer system acts as a client to the Internet server component, performing logon functions for a user, scanning Internet content associated with permitted URLs , and updating the Internet server component with a URL, indicating that the URL is prohibited if a predefined word or phrase is located in the Internet content associated with the URL. The Internet filtering software arrangement permits the same level of filtering to be applied to a user no matter where the user accesses the Internet from, as long as the computer system is running the second component, i.e., the client software.
