Abstract

A method and apparatus for monitoring the use of software functions. The method includes the steps of activating a software function, initializing a usage meter, updating periodically the usage meter and stopping the usage meter when the function is deactivated. In preferred embodiments the meter is updated in response to messages sent from the operating system. The invention also includes internal software integrity checks. Using the method and apparatus of the invention allows software users to pay for only those software functions used, thereby increasing the availability of software to users who would not otherwise pay for a full software package.
