. ALBERT HENRYVsTRONG, OE TORONTO, CANADA.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,967, dated June 22, 1897. Application filed October 8, 1896. Serial No. 608,290. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ALBERT' HENRY STRONG, a subject of the Queen of England, and a resident of Toronto, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to puzzles; and the Object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction but the solution of which is difcult, said solution, however, being capable of accomplishment by the exercise of care, skill, and ingenuity in the manipulation of the device.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a central vertical section of my improved puzzle, and Fig. 2 a plan View thereof.
In the practice of my invention I lprovide a box or casing 5, which is preferably circular in form and provided with a glass or other transparent cover 6.
The box or casing 5 is preferably from three to four inches deep, and secured to the bottom 7 and centrally thereof, is a globular or spherical receptacle 8, which is open at the top, as shown at 9, and said receptacle is provided on the under lower side thereof with a neck l0, by which it is secured to the bottom 7 by means of a screw or bolt ll, but said receptacle may be secured ,to said bottom in any desired manner or may be formed thereon. I-also provide a plurality of balls or bodies 12which are preferably elliptical in longitudinal section and circular in crosssection, or similar in form to an egg;'but my invention is not limited to the' exact form of these bodies.
The balls or bodies l2 are, as shown in Fig. 2, six in number, but any preferred number thereof may be employed; and the solution of the puzzle consists in manipulating the box or casing so as to lodge said balls or bodies in the receptacle 8. This solution is exceedingly dicult, but may be accomplished, and itis evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a circular box or casing having a transparent cover, a globular or spherical receptacle secured to the bottom thereof and having an open top, a neck secured to the lower side of said receptacle and engaging the said bottom the inner surface of said receptacle conforming in outline with the outer surface thereof thereby partially preventing any obj ect being thrown out after it is once received, all substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a circular box or casing having a transparent cover, a 'globular or spherical receptacle secured to the bottom thereof and having an open top, a neck secured to the lower side of said receptacle and engaging the said bottom, the inner surface of said receptacle conforming in outline with the outer surface thereof, and a plurality of egg-shaped balls, all substantially as shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 30th day of September, 1896.
