PLAYING-CARDS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,991, dated May 20, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDGAR J. Lnvnv, a citizen of the United States,residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Playing-Cards, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to increase the combinations and the variety of games which can be played with a pack of playingcards.

My present invention is an improvement on the invention heretofore made and patented to I. Levy, No. 178,863, June 20, 1876, wherein, instead of the king, queen, and knave of the diamonds, clubs, hearts, and spades, respectively, which are contained in the ordinary pack of playing-cards, is substituted for the king a card containing thirteen pips, for a queen a card with twelve pips, and for a knave a card with eleven pips; but the obj ection to this previous invention consists in the fact that a deck of playing-cards made in accordance therewith contains no picture or court cards, and is therefore not readily adaptable to the playing of games of which courtcards are a part.

In order to remove this objection, my inventi on combines in one the card containing eleven pips with the picture of the knave, that of twelve pips with the picture of the queen, and that of thirteen pips with the picture of the king. These pictures of the king, queen, and knave may be of the full figures or only of a part thereof; but they should preferably be composed of the head only, as shown in the drawings, so as to leave space enough 011 the cards to contain the pips.

My invention further consists in indicating fully the character of the cards by marginal symbols. For this purposeI insert on the upper left-hand border of the card a letter to show that the card is a court-card and the kind of court-card that it is, whether king, queen, or knave, K representing king, Q queen, and J the jack or knave; under this letter a symbol showing the character of pip on the card, whether heart, spade, club, or diamond, and

beneath this a number, either 11, 12, or 13, to

indicate the number of pips on the card.

My invention is fully shown by the drawings, wherein Figure 1. represents the king, or

thirteen of hearts; Fig. 2, the queen, or twelve of hearts, and Fig. 3 the knave, or eleven of diamonds.

It is obvious that my invention need not be confined to a pack of only fifty-two playingcards, but in a pack containing any number of cards, with the cards containing any number of pips, my invention would be applicable. For example, if one wished to play a game with an ordinary pack of fifty-two cards, he could discard all above that number and recognize the court-cards as such or only as pip-cards, in accordance with the requirements of the game.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. A pack of playing-cards having cards in each suit which contain the picture of the court-card they are intended to represent, to gether with the spots or suit-pips they are intended to represent, substantially as described.

2. A pack of playing-cards having imprinted on one of each suit a picture to represent the knave and also eleven spots or pips, and a picture to represent the queen and also twelve spots or pips, and a picture to represent the king and also thirteen spots or pips, respectively, substantially as described.

3. A pack of playing-cards having in each suit a card containing eleven spots or pips and the head of a knave, a card containing twelve spots or pips and the head of a queen, and a card containing thirteen spots or pips and the head of a king, substantially as described.

4.. A pack of playing-cards having in each suit a card containing eleven pips or spots and the head of a knave, a card containing twelve spots or pips and the head of a queen, and a card containing thirteen spots or pips and the head of a king, together with characters upon the upper lefthand margin of each of these cards, as follows: the first letter of the title of the court-card, a pip of the kind contained on the card, and a number corresponding with the number of pips on the card, substantially as described.
