CHURN.

Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 27,504, dated March 13, 1860.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL H. VViswnLL, of the city of Buffalo, county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement on a Churn; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of the specification, in which the iigure is a longitudinal elevation.

A an inner cover; D a tube surrounding the shaft marked S and fastened to cover A; E the slit or cut in cover A; C the ribs; B the concave scoop or arm; F a box for the spindle of the shaft to run in, made of lignum vitae or hemlock knot.

I do not claim the shape of the churn, the shaft, the ribs, (excepting the slant and sharp edge of the top of said ribs) or the power by which the churn is operated, nor the converting milk or cream into butter by process of churning.

The nature of my invention and improvement consists in the application of the scoops or arms marked B inserted in a shaft marked S, one at the base, the upper edge of which scoop or arm leans backward ten degrees; the second, one third distant to the left, the upper edge of which leans backward five degrees; the third, one third distant from the second and above the other at right angles. The scoops or arms being placed inclining to such different degrees as above mentioned is for t-he purpose of throwing the milk or cream against the ribs marked C and upward against the inner cover marked A.

In placing an inner cover marked A surrounding the shaft marked S by means of a tube marked D and the location thereof near the top of the churn, which inner cover from the outside of one side of said shaft shall be' slit to the margin thereof, so that an aperture shall thereby be made. One part of said inner cover thus slit, to be elevated above the other and being thus elevated to project or extend beyond the lower, as appears in the annexed diagram marked E. The sharp edge and slanting downward of the top of the ribs marked O.

That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent isC The inner cover marked A of the form described; the scoops or arms marked B; the sharp edge and slant of the upper part of ribs marked C, combined and arranged as specified for the purposes set forth.
