Patented Mar. 6, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT O F F l C E HUNTING LICENSE HOLDER Glenn J. Smith, 'Hazelhurst, Pa, hpplication January 2, 1948, Serial No.47
This invention relates to holders for licenses, identification cards or the like and more particularly to hunting license holders adapted to be attached to a hunting coat or similar garm It isthepractice in many states to issue hunters colored cards bearing largeinumerals as well as hunting certificates. "The game laws of these states require the hunter to wear these numbered cards prominently displayed on their outer clothing Whereas the hunting certificate need only be carried by the hunter. Both the cards and hunting certificates must be available for inspection by game wardens upon request. Numerous devices have been provided for holding and displaying the numbered cards described but these have been objectionable for the most part in that it has been necessary to modify or especially adapt the hunting garment by sewing tabs or the like thereto in order to provide means for attaching the holder. Furthermore, the devices of this type heretofore available have been so constructed that it was possibly to display only a single card or license. Thus, if it became necessary to display two documents or both faces of a single document these had to be completely removed from the holder.
It is the primary object of this invention to provide a hunting license holder which may be attached to a hunting garment without modifying the garment for this purpose.
Another object of this invention is to provide a hunting license holder in which two documents or the opposite faces of a single document may be displayed simultaneously.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a hunting license holder comprising a flat pocket having apertured Walls covered with transparent sheets and an extension for attaching the holder to a garment, the holder being simply and economically formed from leather, fabric or the like.
A further object of this invention is to provide a hunting license holder comprising a flat pocket having apertured walls covered with transparent sheets and an extension with a tongue secured thereto which is adapted to protect the transparency in the rear wall of the holder from wear caused by the abrasive action of the hunting garment to which the holder is attached.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is front elevational view of a hunting 1 Claim. (01. sm-
- 2 licen e ho de embq v eth u s o th invention;
Figure 2 is a rear .elevational view thereof; Figures 3 and 4 are seetional views taken along 5 lines .3 3Qand 4-4 respectively of Figure l; and
. othe drawings in detail, the license ises an elongated flat pocket I which is preferably rectangular in shape. The pocket l is formed from a single piece of leather, imitation leather or waterproof fabric Which includes two rectangular members 2 and 3. An extension 2a is provided on the lateral edge of the member 2 and a small rectangular extension 5 is provided on one of the transverse edges of the member 3. The members 2 and 3 are provided with rectangu lar openings 6 and I respectively which are covered by transparent sheets 8 and 9 of cellulose derivative or a synthetic resinous material. The transparent sheets 8 and 9 are attached to the members 2 and 3 by rows of stitching Ill-l0 adjacent the edges of the openings 6 and I.
The pocket I is formed from the members 2 and 3 by first folding the small rectangular extension 5 upon itself along the dotted line I I and then folding the rear wall member 3 over the forward wall member 2 along the dotted line l2. The free edge of the extension 5 is engaged between the wall members 2 and 3. The coinciding transverse edges of the wall members 2 and 3 are joined by rows of stitching l3|3 thus providing a flat, rectangular pocket having an opening along the lateral edge thereof adjacent the extension 20 The loop 5 along the transverse edge of the pocket I serves as a holder for a pencil 5a or other writing implements.
A tongue member 4 comprising an elliptically shaped piece of the same material employed in wall members 2 and 3 is placed upon the extension 2a. A pair of openings l5,l5 provided in the tongue member 4 are registered with a corresponding pair of openings [6-46 formed in the extension 2a. The tongue member 4 and the extension 2a are joined by rows of stitching l4l4 which may be -a continuation of the rows of stitching I3--l3 if desired and the double lateral rows of stitching ll--l1. The openings provided in the extension l8 which is composed of the extending portion 2a of the pocket I and the corresponding juxtaposed portion of the tongue 4, are adapted to receive buttons l9-l9 or other suitable fasteners which may be employed to attach the license holder to a hunting coat or similar garment. The corners of the pocket I 3 adjacent the opening therein are reinforced by rivets 2|.
The free end of the tongue member 4 extends downwardly over the rear wall member 3 and a substantial portion of the transparent sheet 9 thus providing a protecting member 20. This depending portion 20 functions as a cover for the opening in the pocket I and protects the transparent sheet 9 from coming into contact with the hunting garment to which the license holder is attached. The transparent sheet 9 is thus protected from wear and the transparency thereof is preserved thereby permitting visual perception of documents placed in the pocket I.
I claim:
A license holder adapted to be attached to a garment comprising a fiat rectangular pocket including front and rear walls secured together along their lowermost edges and each of the side edges thereof, the adjacent uppermost edges of said front and rear walls being free to provide an opening in said pocket, said front and rear walls each being provided with rectangular openings, transparent sheets secured respectively to the inner faces of said front and rear walls adjacent the openings therein and extending across each of said openings to form transparent closures therefor, said front wall having an integrally formed portion coextensive with said opening in said pocket and extending outwardly therefrom, and a tongue member secured to the rear face of said extending portion adjacent said opening in said pocket, said tongue member having a depending portion extending downwardly over said opening, said rear wall and a substantial portion of the transparent sheet covering the opening in said rear wall whereby the depending portion of said tongue member protects said transparent sheet from wear resulting from abrasive action due to contact with said garment.
