REMOVABLE PURSE FOR HANDBAGS Filed Nov. 20-, 1.947
IN V EN TOR. DAVID FILE NBAUM Patented Mar. 6, 1 951 a- 1 ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE REMOVABLE PURSE FOR HANDBAGS David .Filenbaum, Wood-Ridge, N. J.
Application November 20, 1947, Serial No. 787,136
2 Claims. (Cl. 15028) This invention relates to an improved lady's handbag.
More particularly the present invention proposes a handbag with a pocket in one of its side Walls having an external opening, and a purse which nests in this pocket and is provided with a c osure flap'which may be sealed or coupled directly to the outer face of'the sidewall and which will thereby seal the opening cf the pocket of the side wall and at the same time hold the purse sealed. A further object of the invention is the provision of a combined handbag and outside purse, wherein the purse is enclosed by the handbag, but may be opened by lifting its own closure flap from a'snap button coupling with the handbag, and may be closed against its own side wall when completely withdrawn from the handbag, and carried in hand.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanyin drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the combined handbak and hand purse, embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a front perspective view of the hand purse removed, showing the closure flap thereof in a raised position from the body of the purse.
Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the back of the purse.
Referring to the drawing, which illustrates the practical or commercial application of the invention to one type of ladies handbag, I designates a general bag construction, having side walls II and [2, a bottom gusset l3, and end gussets l4 and I5, which connect the side walls to each other, in the usual manner. v
The side walls H and I2 are provided with closure strips I6 and I1, and companion rows of slide fastener hooks which are shown interlocked to each other at l8, and opened and closed by the usual slide l9.
A handle loop is secured to one end of the handbag and a handle loop 2| is secured to the other end thereof. A hand strap 22 is connected at its ends to the loops 20 and 2|, and is provided with overlapping sections 22 and 22, which are 2 adjustable on each other by means of the buckle 23, and the loop 24.
The side wall I1 is formed with a pocket 25, which has an elongated slot 26 through said side Wall, near the upper longitudinal edge H of the side wall. This pocket is provided with a suitable lining 21, located between the leather or material 28 of the side wall I I and the lining 29 of the handbag.
In the pocket '25, a hand purse 3D is inserted through the slot 23 thereof. The pocket 25 is deep enough to completely enclose the purse 30, so that its upper edge will be concealed by the side wall II. However, to support the purse 30 on the side wall II, a button snap element 3| is provided on said side wall H which is engaged by the button snap element 32 of the closure flap 33 of the purse.
The body 34 of the purse is first inserted in the pocket 25, and the closure flap 33 is placed astride on the wall of the pocket, which forms a part of the side wall ll, and the button snap element 32 I of the closure flap 33 is coupled to the button 1 snap element 3| of the side wall H, so that the closure flap 33 appears as a decorative element of the complete handbag, as indicated in Fig. 1.
To improve the general appearance of the combined unit, the body 34 of the purse is constructed slightly shorter than the closure flap 33, which is thus provided with opposite end portions 33 and 33 which project outwardly of the closure flap, and provide means for effectively masking or concealing the edges of the slot 26 of the pocket 25.
The inner longitudinal edge portion of the closure flap 33 is formed with a permanent roll or curve 33, which adds to the decorative appearance of the flap, when it is secured against the side wall H of the handbag, and also provides a seat for the purse. The side wall 35 of the purse is provided with a button snap element 36 which is designed to mate with the button snap element 32 of the closure flap, and which thus provides means for securing the closure flap 33 against the side wall 35 of the purse, when it is desired to use the purse independently of the handbag.
When the user desires to open the purse without removing the same from the pocket 25, the closure flap 33 is lifted from its coupling connection with the side wall ll, so that the contents of the purse may be felt or seen. In this operation, the end projecting portions 33 and 33 serve as stops to prevent the purse from dropping entirely into the handbag pocket 25.
By snapping the closure flap coupling element 32 against the mating element 3| of the side Wall ll of th handbag, the purse will be secured in place with its own closure flap blending into the body structure of the handbag, and thus adding, because of its color and finish, to the general decorative appearance of the handbag.
The body of the purse is also formed with a longitudinal opening closed by means of the slide fastener hooks 38, operated by the usual slide 39, which closes and opens the pocket built in said body.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all ch'angts and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a handbag having a wall, a purse having a body and a top closure flap therefore, the wall being formed with a horizontal elongated slot of a length less than the width of the wall but slightly greater than the width of said purse body so that said purse body can be extended through said slot with said flap depending along the outer face of the wall, a fastener element on the wall below said slot and beneath said flap, and a complementary fastener element on said flap and engageable with said first-mentioned fastener element holding said fiap in position depended alOng the outer face of said wall, said flap having its ends projected beyond the sides of said purse body forming projecting portions which abut the outer face of the material of the wall at the ends of said slot supporting the purse in a position in which the fastener element of said flap will be aligned with the fastener element of said wall to facilitate engagement of those fastener elements.
2. In a. handbag having a, wall, a purse having a body and a top closure flap therefore, the wall being formed with a horizontal elongated slot of a length less than the width of the wall but slightly greater than the width of said purse body so that said purse body can be extended through said slot with said flap depending along the outer face of the wall, a fastener element on the wall below said slot and beneath said flap, and a complementary fastener element onsaid flap and engageable with said first-mentioned fastener element holding said flap in position depended along the outer face of said wall, said flap having its ends projected beyond the sides of said purse body forming projecting portions which abut the outer face of the material of the wall at the ends of said slot supporting the purse in a position in which the fastener element of said flap will be aligned with the fastener element of said wall to facilitate engagement of those fastener elements, said flap being uniformly wider than said purse body So as to cover the ends of said slot located at the sides of said purse body.
