JOSIAH LETOHWORTH, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAMES FOR HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,507, dated February 17, 1874; application led October 2l, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I7 JosIAH LETeHwoRTH, of the city of Buifalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a certain Improvement in Haines, of which the following is a specification:
My improvement relates to the construction ot` the iron strap which is applied to the back of the hame, to impart to it greater strength and stiness. Previous to my invention this strap or plate has commonly consisted ota rectangular form in cross-section, or such a strap with the outer corners rounded ott'. As one of the objects of this strap is to retain the hame in its proper bent shape, the strap for heavy draft-hames is required to be of considerable stiffness, for which purpose so much metal is necessary, when the strap is made in the form above described, as to not only add materially to the cost of the hames, but also to render them heavy and cumbersome to handle. My invention consists in making the iron back strap of hamesin the shape of a segment otl a cylinder, the edges of the strap resting against the back of the haines, whereby, with a much less quantity of metal, a strap of increased stiil'- ness is produced, which results in a saving of metal, and in enabling thev wooden portion to be made of reduced size.
In the accompanying drawing, which represents a cross-section of a hame provided with my improved strap, A is the wooden portion, and B the iron strap, the shape of which is clearly representedin the drawing. The edge of the strap rests against the wood, and is of sufficient width to form a proper bearing. The strap is secured to the wood by rivets, Sac., in the usual manner.
A strap of the shape shown, when conformed to the llame, imparts to the latter great strength and rigidity, while the wooden portion can be so reduced in size as to greatly improve the appearance ofthe haine.
What I claim as my invention is- The haine A, provided with the metallic strap B, of the form shown, whereby the shape of the llame is maintained, and the device rendered strong, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
