UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
GOTTHARD SCHAFF AND JOHN A; SOHAFF, OF CHICAGO, ILLlNOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DESKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l38,585, dated May 6, 1873 application filed April 8, 1873.
To all whom it 'may concm:
Be it known that we, GOTTHARD SCHAFF and JOHN A. SCHAFF, ofChicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylinder-Dcsks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms part of this specification.
The nature of our invention relates to an improvement in cylinder-desks and it consists in a vertical iron rod having a number of catches extending outward from its front side for lockin g the top and drawers, and which is balanced upon one end of a small tilting-lever, the lever having upon its other end a small upright rod, upon which the cylinder rests when thrown back, and which thus tilts the lever up so as to raise the catches and release both the top and the drawers.
Figure 1 is a rear View of the desk, showing the rods and levers. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same with the top back.
a represents the desk, provided with the cylindrical top o, pivoted at the sides so as to swing back and forth, the sliding top e, and any desired number of drawers, g, in the usual manner. Upon a cross-piece, h, near the bottom is pivoted a tilting-lcver, i, upon one end i of which is placed the upright iron rod l, having a number of catches, 2, eXtending from its front side, which may catch either upon the tops of the drawers and top to lock them or upon the catches o eXtending outward from their rear sides. Upon the opposite end of the i lever i is placed a light rod, 3, upon the top of which the cylindrical top rests, as shown in Fig. 2, and which presses down upon the tilting-lover so as to raise the rod l upward and thus release both the top and the drawers from the catches. As soon as the top is closed the rod falls from its own weight and automatically looks the various parts again.
This device is exceeding simple and cheap, and much more preferable than anyof those now in use.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The lever i, rod l provided with suitable catches, and rod 3, in combination with a suitable cover, c, for Operating them, substantially as set forth. a
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 4th day of April, 1873.
