"To all 1071 cm it may, concern lie? it known that l, GEORGE W. KIRK- PATRILK, a citizen of the United States, and
sites, the object being a resident of Rochester, 'in the county of l /lonroe and State oi New York, have 111-:
Vented anew and improved Sprinkling ."Device for Fire Protection, of which the ollowzng 1s a specification.
"'lt hisinvention relates to sprinkling deto provide a sprine lrling device, preferably comprising a rotat lngrspr nkl inghead with mechanism for con- F trolling 1 the. direction of the stream or astreamsofliquid issuing therefrom in'such a: way as to overcome the tendency to a def flection thereof by a current of air.
In carrying out my invention I may make use of a revolving sprinkler head which is attached tea rotatable supply member, the
'p'arts bing so conformed that the main direction of the spray or stream from the revolving sprinklinghead is deflected from a, perpendicularwhile'the axis of the revolving sprinkling head is directed at any desired point of the compass. The supply member to which therevolving sprinkler head is attached is supported to rotate upon a vertical axis and by means of mechanism permitting the free rotation of the parts on such vertical axis, while the stream issuing therefrom is deflected from such vertical axis and is caused to impingengainst and cause the rotation of the revolving sprinkler head. To the supply member I attach a wind vane adapted in its operation to direct the streams issuing-from the sprinkler head against the wind or current of air.
In the accompanying drawings 1' have shown that embodiment of 'my invention adapted to use in protecting the roof of a building against fire without limiting myself, howevento such or any particular em bodiment thereof.
Such drawings" are as follows,Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the rotatable supply member and the u per and lower ends of the extension to t e supply pipe leading thereto shown partly in section.
Fig. 2 is e transverse horizontal sectional I Specification of Letters Eatent.
1 lower end oi the rod R v the enlarged head (i on the extension of a detail to be explained.
' Patented July 20, 1915.
Application filed August 12, l .911. Serial No. 643,714.
Similar-parts are designatedby similar reference characters throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings,-H represents a part of thereof of protected extending upwardly through which is seen the supply pipe P in vertical 1 engagement central section making threaded at its upper end with a fixed extension memer D between the shoulderedlower end al of which andthe upper end of the pipe P the building to be there IS clamped the perforated metallic the-central orifice rotatably'reoeive the for-the purpose to be washer member w, which 15 adapted to explained.
Upon the roof H there may preferably be member U extend secured a tubular jacket ing upwardly within-a'hood member T-carriedby the enlarged lower end d ofthe (22- tension D to prevent'the water from entering the building inside of the ember U, at the bottom of which is seen a flange u for securing the same to the roof.:
The rotating supply member E comprises a hollow its lower and larger end a perforated member 6 into, which there may be secured the upper end of the rodR freely rotatable as above mentioned in the member 10 and operating to brace the parts against the action of the wind and the reaction of the issuing stream Onto the upper and smaller end of the member E there may be secured a sprinkler head, shown in this instance at S, as of a well known construction, having the revolving vane s thereon operating in the usual way to divide the issuing stream into a spray and throwing the same in all directions outwardly and away from the'axis' of its rotation.
' The member E is provided on its convex side with a projecting-flange o to which issecured the wind vane by means of rivets or screws r. 6n the lower end of the member E there is threaded the collar C while casting and hasvext'ending across ion the lower end of the member E and the col- The operation of the device is as'follows;-The apparatus being installed in the manner indicated in the drawings and the pipe P being connected, through the medium of any suitable valve, with a suitable source of supply of Water under pressure, the water as it is forced through the pipe P and ex tension D enters the member E and passes I therethrough and outwardly therefrom at causing the same to rotate and is the opening indicated in dotted lines in the upper left hand end of this member in Fig. land impinges against the rotating vane s also deflected thereby into a fine spray While the .upon its vertical rotatably connected with said extension member, and having a passage therethrough terminating in an outlet adapted to discharge the liquid at an angle with the axis of rotation of such element, a Wind vane on said element, a bracing rod extending longitudinally of and within said extension member, means carried 'by said rotatable element for securely holding one end of said rod,
and a suitable bearing located in said pipe' extension Within which the other end I 0 said rod is freely rotatable, said rod adsi'iited to brace the parts against the wind and the reaction of the issuing stream, and said vane adapted to control the direction of discharge of the issuing stream.
2. In a device for the a supply pipe connected with a suitable source of liquid under pressure, a member forming an extension to said supply pipe, an element rotatably connected with said extension member and having a passage therethrough terminating in an outlet adaptpurpose described,
ed to discharge the liquid at an angle with the axis of rotation of such element, :1 revoluble sprinkler head, secured to the outer end of said element, ;a Wind vane on said element, a bracing rodextending longitudinally of and within said extension member, means carried by said rotatable element for securely holding one endof said rod, and a suitable bearing located in said pipe extension Within which the other endof said rod is freely rotatable, s'aid rod adapted to brace the parts against the wind and the reaction of the issuing stream, and said vane adapted to control the direction of, discharge of the issuing stream.
